More than $43 million in federal funding was recently awarded to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois for a Twin Cities to Chicago high-speed passenger rail corridor.
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced on Thursday an additional $2.4 billion for 54 high-speed rail projects in 23 states, on top of the $8 billion included in the stimulus package.
While 45 percent of the stimulus money was allocated to projects in California and Florida, a significant portion of the new funding will aid projects that run through more than one state.
“States understand that high-speed rail represents a unique opportunity to create jobs, revitalize our manufacturing base, spur economic development and provide people with an environmentally friendly transportation option,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
The momentum behind high-speed passenger rail development is a positive sign for the Southeast Minnesota Rail Alliance, even with its focus on an intra-state corridor between Rochester and the Twin Cities.
